When I was 8 years old and my sister was 10 our father contacted tuberculosis. In 1935 we were sent to a preventitorium located outside of Columbus, Ohio. The facility was called Nightingale Cottage. It was funded through the American Lung Association for the purpose isolating children from tuberculosis and building strong bodies through good food, plenty of fresh air and exercise. The people who operated the facility created a family atmosphere that I don’t think could be duplicated today. I have never forgotten them.
